Nursing Home Residents are Vulnerable to Abuse and Neglect

Although many nursing homes provide excellent care, abuse and neglect of nursing home residents commonly occurs. The task of a nursing home is to look after vulnerable people with complex physical and cognitive needs on a 24-hour basis. It is vital for these facilities to ensure that their residents are free from maltreatment of any form. Given the many vulnerabilities of residents who reside in these facilities, keeping the nursing home environment free of abuse is always challenging. There are federal guidelines ensuring the well-being of the residents, but developing appropriate policy and protocols can be largely dependent upon funding.

Inadequate care and treatment comes in many forms. The facility may be understaffed, or the staff may be poorly trained. Staff may be mistreating the residents by isolating them, failing to treat them medically, failing to feed them nutritiously, etc. Residents may become aggressive physically, emotionally or sexually with each other.

Residents are sometimes frightened to speak to their loved ones in fear of retaliation from the staff. Many residents in nursing homes experience limited social networks after entering a facility and reduced interaction with the outside community. They may be unable to effectively communicate their concerns to a loved one. Residents may have physical and cognitive limitations that prevent them from understanding what is happening to them. If the resident is entirely dependent on the staff for all their needs, including the most basic ones such as using the bathroom, eating, drinking and being medically treated on and off the premises, their fears can become intensified.
