Predicting the Long Term Effects of Brain Injuries

Experts are continuously seeking ways to accurately diagnose brain injuries in a timely fashion. When a patient is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, many of their questions, including, “what will the long term effects be?” are difficult, if not impossible, to answer.

There are a number of variables that contribute to long-term effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBI)

1) severity of initial injury

2) rate and completeness of physiological healing

3) types of functions affected

4) meaning of dysfunction in the individual’s life, in the context of his/her roles, values, and goals

5) resources available to aid recovery of function; and so forth.

While it is imperative to consider the variables, some of the ‘typical’ symptoms include: difficulty concentrating or remembering new information, confusion, behavioral or psychological changes, problems with vision, hearing, smell taste and touch, and so on.

If a brain injury is the result of someone else’s negligence the affected party or their family may be able to seek compensation to help cover medical bills, loss of future earnings, and so on and so forth. To learn more click here
