A report released by State Comptroller Thomas D. Napoli early this year confirmed the fears and suspicions of many:
- Nursing Home abuse and neglect is happening here in New York.
- The government officials responsible for preventing abuse and neglect have not been successful in taking action to reduce the likelihood of future or present sub-par nursing home conditions, including conditions that suggest nursing home residents have been or could be abused/neglected.
Other reports have surfaced throughout the country, indicating nursing home abuse and neglect is a far larger problem than many had anticipated.
According to LAW360, “In 2013, a report from the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that almost 40 percent of nursing home stays fell short of Medicare’s quality-of-care standards, often by lacking oversight of medications or bedsores.”
On March 30th the U.S. Department of Justice finally took action. 10 new task forces comprised of federal, state, and local officials will work in unison to uncover misconduct and prevent future wrongdoings before they occur.
Unfortunately, New York is not one of the states in which the task force will operate.
