Highest Number of Workplace Fatalities in 9 Years

In 2015 nearly 5,000 people died while on the job. Although workplace injuries have decreased slightly year over year, officials are alarmed by the recent rise in on-the-job fatalities.

“‘These numbers underscore the urgent need for employers to provide a safe workplace for their employees as the law requires, we have a moral responsibility to make sure that workers who showed up to work today are still alive to punch the clock tomorrow.’“ Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, the National Safety Council

Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers were involved in more fatal incidents than any other occupation. The total number of roadway incident fatalities increased 9%. The number of workplace fatalities in the private construction industry was also notably high.

Government and safety organizations are exploring policies, training, and other factors that may reduce the staggering number of annual workplace fatalities.
