As the autumn season approaches us, it’s our last opportunity to enjoy a family road trip before the snow hits and the slippery roads make it difficult to travel. But among the beauty of the colorful trees and crisp nights, come some hazards we should be aware of. Don’t let them ruin your final trip before the winter season. Falling Leaves As the leaves begin to change colors and fall to the ground during this cool season, the roads may become dangerous if these leaves become wet. If you happen to hit a patch of wet leaves, you can easily lose traction resulting in difficulty breaking or steering. Be aware of this hazard and drive carefully and slowly if the roads are wet and covered in leaves. You also want to avoid driving over piles of dry leaves as well – they could ignite on hot engine parts! Back to School Kids are back in school, which means you need to be extra careful when entering a school zone. Kids are crossing the streets and getting on and off school buses. Some kids may not be readily visible so take extra precaution when driving through a school zone. Variable Weather The weather tends to vary in the fall, creating for potential frosty nights and sudden showers. Roads may be slick in the morning or evenings. Make sure your wiper blades, tires and brakes are properly maintained. Take time to clean or defrost your windshield before heading out in the morning. Animal Activity Autumn is a time for greater animal activity, as it is mating season for deer, elk, moose and other large animals. Deer may be darting across the roads more often during this season. Smaller animals are more active during this season as well because they are gathering food to store for the winter. Slow down and be alert if you live in an area where these animals roam. If you see movement of an animal on the side of the road, decrease your speed and proceed with caution
. Stay safe on the roads this season. Take it slow and stay alert! If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident, contact Finkelstein & Partners for help. Read about these fall safety tips.
