When a school bus flashes its large red lights located on the top of the bus, this means the bus is getting ready to stop to drop off or pick up children. You MUST stop whether you are approaching the school bus from the front or from the rear. Even on divided or multi-lane highways, you must stop when you see these lights.
Do you know the consequences for not stopping for a stopped school bus?
Besides the potential of injuring a child, first offenders will receive a minimum fine of $250 and a maximum fine of $400. First offenders may also face up to 30 days of imprisonment.
Your second conviction within three years will land you a minimum of a $600 fine and a maximum of $750 with the possibility of up to 180 days in prison.
A third time offender within a three year period faces a minimum fine of $750 and a maximum fine of $1000 with the possibility of up to 180 days in prison.
REMEMBER: Yellow light means the bus is going to slow down. Red lights mean students are getting on or off the bus.
