Nearly 5,000 emergency room visits in 2012 were from preventable injuries from pool chemicals, according to a recent study released by the CDC. Approximately 50% of those injuries were sustained by children or teenagers, with more than 1/3 of these injuries occurring at home. Pool chemical injuries were common during the summer season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and almost half occurred on weekends.

Kraft Foods Group has voluntarily recalled select Knudsen Cottage Cheese, Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese, Simply Kraft Cottage Cheese, and Daily Chef Cottage Cheese products. Some ingredients used in these products were not stored at the proper temperature safe for consumption and within Kraft’s standards.

There may be a possibility of spoilage and/or food borne illness. Approximately 1.2 million cases of the affected product were shipped to consumers across the country.

FDA - May 6, 2014 - WALTHAM, Mass. – Alere Inc. (NYSE:ALR) has initiated a voluntary Class 1 recall in the U.S. of the Alere INRatio2 PT/INR Professional Test Strips (PN 99008G2). This action is a result of complaints of patients who had a therapeutic or near therapeutic INR with the Alere INRatio2 PT/INR Professional Test Strip but a significantly higher INR (outside of therapeutic range) when performed by a central laboratory.

Bacai is recalling 13165 lot (lot number is found next to the expiration date) of LiteFit USA, to the retail and consumer level. This product is used as an herbal diet supplement and is packaged in plastic bottles of 30 softgels. Sample analysis by the FDA has revealed that this product contained sibutramine, a medication that assists with weight-loss by altering neurotransmitters within the brain. It was withdrawn from the market due to the risk of serious cardiovascular events.

BOHS, the chartered society for worker health protection, are calling on employers to comply with the legal exposure limits for known carcinogens. The latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) highlight when BOHS believe to be an unacceptably high number of deaths due to occupational cancers. It is estimate that 8,000 cancer deaths and some 13,500 newly diagnosed cancer cases each year may be due to work-related exposures.

Due to a labeling mishap, Kraft is recalling 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer Classic Wiener. A consumer alerted the company of unexpected cheese filling their mouth when biting into the product. Following the alert, Kraft issued the Class I Recall due to incorrect labeling of the Classic Cheese Dogs. No adverse reactions have been reported.

WARNING! On January 14, 2014 the FDA issued a safety alert with respect to drugs containing testosterone based on two published studies that suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular events among men who are prescribed testosterone therapy.  These studies indicated that these drugs may increase the risk of ischemic stroke, heart attack or death.
