Car Insurance Debate Pits Gov. Hochul Against Trial Lawyers

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s latest proposal to lower New York’s high car insurance rates is drawing sharp criticism from the state’s trial lawyer community. While Hochul says her plan, which is aimed at curbing fraud and reducing costly payouts, will help drivers, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association argues it won’t deliver meaningful relief and could benefit insurance companies more than policyholders. The debate highlights ongoing tension over how best to make auto insurance more affordable for everyday New Yorkers. The Capitol Press Room, a WCNY radio production, sat down with Andrew Finkelstein, president of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and Managing Partner of Finkelstein & Partners, LLP, to discuss this.
