ATV Shocking Injury Statistics & Safety Tips

In 2011, there were more than 100,000 ATV injuries. Of those injuries, 30% were sustained by children under the age of 16. Arm and hand injuries accounted for 29% or 31,300 of these 100,000 injuries last year. Riding an ATV can be dangerous and potentially life threatening. Take the proper precautions before taking this heavy machinery out for a ride:

  • Always wear a helmet and other necessary protective gear such as eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
  • Do not drive an ATV with a passenger.
  • Take a safety course before riding.
  • Do not drive ATVs on paved roads. The most ATV-related deaths occurred in paved surfaces.
  • Do not allow children under the age of 16 to drive or ride on an ATV.
  • Do not drive ATVs while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In 2010, there were 590 reported deaths due to ATV accidents with the highest number of deaths over the past 26 years being in California during the summer months. Don’t become a statistic.
