Residential Care Counselor Held Accountable for Sexual Abuse

On Friday, July 28th an Ulster County Court sentenced a 50-year-old Kington man to 46 years in prison for sexually abusing six Northeast Centre for Special Care residents. The office of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman recommended “a significant sentence based on the defendant’s proven pattern of sexual abuse…”- Hudson Valley Post

The defendant was a counselor at the Northeast Centre for Special care, an institution  that offers care and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from traumatic brain injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than one million individuals are diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury each year. Brain injuries are most commonly caused by motor vehicle crashes, firearm incidents, and fall down injuries. Long-term effects range, while some patients are able to purpose a relatively normal life others have limited function of arms or legs, lose cognitive ability, or are in comatose states.

The former counselor reportedly took advantage of his position and performed sex acts on numerous patients in 2014 and 2015.
