Officials Urge Federal Railroad Administration to Consider Safety Upgrades after Newburgh Derailment

On Tuesday, March 7th a freight train carrying hazardous materials, including sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, and a number of other substances, derailed in Newburgh’s industrial area. The derailed train came dangerously close to striking surrounding buildings and parked oil tankers.

“We dodged a bullet on Tuesday as this accident could have been far worse.”- Sen. Charles Schumer

Senator Schumer along with other effected officials are urging federal officials to examine federal standards for railroad crossings.

“‘We have to get smarter about how we transport crude oil, and invest in installing positive train control (PTC) on all our trains,” he continued. “The longer we fail to prioritize investing in rail safety infrastructure and technology, the more innocent lives we put in jeopardy.’“ -U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) Read more: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/03/07/newburgh-train-derails/
