When it comes to the quality of care to its residents, nursing homes earn a failing grade in the State of New York, according to Families for Better Care, a Florida-based nursing home resident advocacy group. The group published a first-ever state-by-state report card for nursing homes nationwide. Families for Better Care analyzed eight federal measures to gauge nursing home quality.

A Hurley man and his wife were killed on Sunday when their car collided with a truck that was transporting three cars on Route 209, according to the Times-Herald Record. The crash occurred around 11:40am. Preliminary results of an investigation indicate the driver of the car, John Kaufman, 88, pulled out of Wynkoop Road onto Route 209 and into the path of the oncoming truck.

The highest court in Massachusetts affirmed a $20.6 million verdict against Toys R Us Inc. after a 28-year-old woman died using a Chinese pool slide that did not meet federal import requirements. The court awarded the money to the family of Robin Aleo, who suffered severe neck injuries after an inflatable pool slide imported and sold by Toys “R” Us collapsed cause her head to strike the pool’s deck.

The robotic technology, called the da Vinci system, that assists in surgery has been on the market for more than a decade. More than one million procedures have been performed using this robotic device and between 2000 and 2012, thousands of mishaps have been reported to the FDA, as required. In most cases, the patient was not harmed, but among the reports, there were 174 injuries and 71 deaths related da Vinci surgery.

Benjamin and Hope Jordan have their dog to thank for their baby’s safety! The couple says their dog sniffed out a baby abuser in their home, the woman who was supposed to be caring for their 7-month-old son. Benjamin and Hope hired Alexis Khan, 22, to babysit their son last year. They did a background check on Khan and she came up clean. However, 5 months after the couple hired Khan, they noticed that their dog was very protective of their son when Khan would enter the home.

In 2011, there were more than 100,000 ATV injuries. Of those injuries, 30% were sustained by children under the age of 16. Arm and hand injuries accounted for 29% or 31,300 of these 100,000 injuries last year. Riding an ATV can be dangerous and potentially life threatening. Two Clinton Corners residents were killed in a head-on motorcycle crash on Sunday at about 8:20pm on Route 299 in Highland. According to authorities, a 2012 Mini Cooper heading west, operated by Pio Shin, 20, of New Paltz, drifted across the center line of Route 299 and struck a Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by George Hew Jr., 43. Hew and his passenger, Karen Hughes-D’Amico, 46, were ejected from the motorcycle.
