Deplorable nursing home conditions

Several months ago 7 Eyewitness News launched an investigation into area hospitals after receiving a troubling call from a nursing home resident. The investigation brought to light a number of disturbing issues occurring in Upstate New York nursing homes.

New York nursing home abuse

The results of a recent inspection report from an Oswego Nursing home, where residents were allegedly taunted and exploited, conclude the Nursing home failed to conduct background checks on new hires to determine if job candidates had a history of abuse or neglect.

The nursing home also failed to provide abuse prevention training and to properly investigate potential cases of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment.

Negligence of nursing home staff

On Friday, September 2nd a fight broke out at a Buffalo Nursing home between two elderly patients. One of the patients, an 83-year-old woman, died of her injuries.

According to authorities both patients involved in the altercation were suffering from dementia. The victim sustained serious injuries that ultimately lead to her death, including a punctured lung, facial fractures, a broken neck, and a lower back fracture.

Nursing home residents face abuse

On August 5th the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released a troubling memo to state agencies responsible for inspecting nursing homes. The memo instructed each facility to introduce a written policy prohibiting staff from taking or using photos/recordings of residents in any way that could exploit residents (including the usage of cameras, smartphones or other devices and the storage or placement of content on social media).

If you have a loved one in a Nursing Home you should consider familiarizing yourself with signs and symptoms associated with Nursing Home abuse/neglect. The percentage of abused or neglected nursing home residents who actually report abuse is startlingly low. Below is a list of indicators of abuse and neglect. Some symptoms listed could be a result of existing health conditions, while others, like pressure ulcers (bed sores) are more telling of abuse/neglect.

Nursing Home Residents

A North Haven, Connecticut Nursing home is facing fines after a patient fell and later died from related complications.

The resident reportedly fell out of bed and suffered injuries including a blog clot in their brain. The use of bed rails very well could have, and should have, prevented the fall and the untimely death of the resident.
