All parents want to keep their children safe no matter how young or old they are.  When children mature into teenagers they are presented with new dangers, as parents it’s our job to stay informed so that we can encourage our children to make good decisions- especially behind the wheel. A horrific accident in Lodi, California has taken the lives of 3 small children, their father and a pregnant woman. The multicar crash happened just after 5:20pm on Tuesday, October 22 at a busy intersection. The children were ages 12, 7 and 5. The father of the three children was also involved in the crash. Also killed in the accident was a 31-year-old woman carrying an unborn baby.

On Monday, September 23, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that in the state of New York, there will be 91 designated areas on the Thruway (I-87) for texting, called “texting zones”. These zones will be existing at current rest stops, Park and Rides, parking areas and other similar safe stopping areas. The state will put up a total of 298 signs pointing motorists toward these “texting zones”.

Distracted driving, in particular texting and driving, has become a major concern for Governor Andrew Cuomo. In 2011, the Governor signed a law that categorized distracted driving as a primary traffic offense. Law enforcement was then allowed to issue tickets for texting-while-driving. Within a year, there was a 234% increase in the number of tickets issued for texting and driving in New York State alone.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association recently unveiled the ‘SafeCar’ app for iPhones. The app allows users to search its 5-Star Safety Ratings for vehicles by make and model, locate car seat installation help, file a vehicle safety complaint, find recall information and subscribe to automatic notices about vehicle recalls. NHTSA also gives app developers real-time access to the data that powers this app.

Savannah Nash’s first solo drive sadly turned out to be her last. Nash, who had recently turned 16, got permission to drive to the store in Harrisonville, Missouri to pick up items for the family dinner. Her vehicle slammed into a tractor-trailer on the way and she died at the scene. The crash may have been caused from texting while driving.
