The snow is beginning to fall and with winter come winter activities. We’re shoveling our driveways and area ways and getting our daily exercise in at the same time! This being said, shoveling can increase our risk of injury, especially for the elderly. Take time to follow these safety tips before you head outside to shovel snow:
- If you have a history of heart problems, consider hiring someone to shovel for you, whether it be a young child knocking on your door looking to make a quick buck, or a professional service. There is an increase in the number of fatal heart attacks among shovelers.
- Make sure to wear warm clothing before heading out. Wear gloves or mittens, a hat and waterproof pants and a jacket. Dress in multiple layers!
- Stretch before you begin.
- Drink plenty of water while you work.
- Push the snow, don’t lift.
- Shovel only fresh, recently fallen snow. It’s easier to shovel!
- Use the right shovel for your height and build.
- If your body tells you to stop, listen to it! Shoveling can be a tough workout. Slow down and take a break if you start getting chest pains, shoulder or neck pains, if you feel dizzy, faint or nauseous.
