New Legislation Passed to Reduce Drunk Driving Crashes in New York

Albany, NY: On Tuesday, November 24th legislation intended to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers, specifically repeat offenders was passed.

The new legislation is in part an amendment to Leandra’s law, which requires those sentenced for driving while intoxicated to have a ignition interlock device installed (also known as an IDD, an apparatus similar to a breathalyzer. The IDD prevents the driver from starting the ignition if their blood alcohol limit is above 0.025 and notifies prosecutors) on any vehicle they own or operate.

As per the new legislation allows courts to extend the IDD requirement if IDD shows delinquency or if the judge feels the individual is highly likely to drive under the influence.
