According to experts, each year an average of 37 children die from heat-related deaths after being trapped inside vehicles. In a memorable demonstration, Los Angeles police officers gathered with local representatives and set up two cars – one with the windows closed and one with them cracked – to demonstrate just how fast each car heats up inside that could potentially be fatal to anyone inside.

According to experts, in 2016 more than 250,000 students ages 5 to 18 were bullied in New York alone. Any repeated interpersonal behavior between children/adolescents, intended to cause physical or psychological harm is considered bullying.

Most instances of bullying fall into one of these four categories:

sleep deprivation

Many of us have experienced bouts of forgetfulness at one point or another, but a sudden lack of recollection can be troubling and even dangerous. The same goes for trouble with vision/focus/perception. These symptoms, which mirror the effects of alcohol, are often caused by sleep deprivation.

A UCLA study found that sleep deprivation may actually disturb brain function, causing mental lapses and issues with visual perception.

Doctor and Patient

This past spring Managing Partner, Andrew Finkelstein & Senior Trial Attorney George Levy met with legislators in Albany to promote and protect New Yorkers’ rights. Among the topics discussed was Lavern’s Law, pending legislation that greatly impacts victims of medical malpractice.

Food

In April 2017, we published a blog with crucial information about EpiPen and EpiPen Jr Recalls. Recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accused Meridian Medical Technologies, Inc., a Pfizer medical company that produces EpiPens, of failing to investigate hundreds of complaints that the life-saving anti-allergy device (commonly known as an EpiPen) misfired during emergency situations.

Patients in a wheel chair

A patient at Newburgh’s St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital recently captured images of what appears to be a bloody wheel chair provided for patient use. According to officials, the hospital confirmed the equipment did not meet the hospital’s standards.

Patients in New York Hospitals have certain rights, including the right to “receive considerate and respectful care in a clean and safe environment” (Health.ny.gov).

Child’s backpack

Does it appear your child’s backpack is growing in size every day? Is your child lugging around a significant portion of their body weight in their backpack? Are you noticing your child struggle to maintain good posture while holding their backpack? You may need to consider if your child’s backpack is affecting their wellbeing.
